Position Overview

SUMaC Drop-In TAs support the Stanford University Mathematics Camp (SUMaC) and ensure an academically enriching experience for participants. Given the academic rigor of SUMaC and the Drop-In TA’s responsibility in fostering an intellectual community, Drop-In TAs must both be math majors and have subject-area knowledge to be eligible for the role.

Drop-In TAs attend daily problem set hours at the SUMaC residence on Monday - Thursday afternoons during the first three weeks of the program. On Fridays and the final days of the program, Drop-In TAs support participants completing their research projects.. Drop-In TAs collaborate with residential staff, the SUMaC instructional team, and SPCS professional staff to ensure the academic success of all participants.

The Drop-In TAs would benefit from having a two day in person onboarding plan in addition to approximately 5-10 hours of virtual asynchronous work. This plan would cover pre-program meetings, trainings, and necessary administrative work to be completed before the arrival of participants in residence.

Position Responsibilities

  • Supervising participants during problem-set hours and supporting their understanding of the problem-set.
  • Leading group problem-solving sessions, office hours and small group conferences with participants to provide them feedback on their problem-set solutions.
  • Maintaining a strong presence within the program - role modeling positive behavior and building relationships with instructors, the residential staff and participants.
  • Consistently communicating with supervisor via Slack, email, or in-person.
  • Attending weekly planning lunches before the start of problem-set hours (lunch cost will be covered by program).
  • Adhering to the SPCS Instructional Handbook, paying particular attention to program rules, daily schedules, and other aspects of the role.
  • Fostering and promoting an inclusive environment for all participants, staff, and SPCS/Stanford OHS community members.
  • Ensuring that participants and staff adhere to all applicable policies at all times, including the Administrative Guide Memo, program policies, the SPCS Code of Conduct, and the Protection of Minors policy.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • College-level coursework as a math major.
  • Creative and positive attitude, including an enthusiasm for working with high school students.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive tasks with multiple deadlines and frequent interruptions.
  • Passion for teaching others and willingness to break down complex math topics in a variety of ways to support different learning styles (Experience teaching minors and/or academically talented youth preferred).
  • Ability to act responsibly, build teams, solve problems, and make good decisions.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.

Additionally, you will preferably bring:

  • Summer camp/program experience or experience working with students ages 12-17, preferably with Stanford Online High School, Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies, or a similar program.

Compensation

The compensation for Drop-In TAs is $36.00 per hour. Hourly pay is taxable income. This is a temporary, non-exempt, part-time on-site position for a maximum of 20 hours per week. Given the needs of the program and varied interest and availability of the Drop-In TAs, not all Drop-In TAs should expect to work 20 hours per week. The Drop-In TA will be responsible for securing their own housing off campus for the duration of this position.
