Resident Director

Position Overview

The Resident Director (RD) supervises the summer residential experience for the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies Program (SPCS) and the Stanford Online High School (OHS) programs. As the senior staff member living in residence, the RD shapes the culture of the residential experience,  ensuring participants have a safe and enjoyable experience.

The RD directly supervises the Assistant Resident Directors, attends to student crises, oversees coordination of all residential staff members, and oversees daily program operations.

The RD would benefit from having a one week in-person onboarding plan in addition to approximately 5-10 hours of virtual asynchronous work. This plan would cover pre-program meetings, trainings, and necessary administrative work to be completed before the arrival of participants in residence.

Position Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safety and supervision of up to 500 minors living in residence across two sessions of the Summer Humanities Institute, one session of the Stanford University Mathematics Camp, one session of Summer @ Stanford High School, and one session of Summer @ Stanford Middle School.
  • Directly supervising and managing the work of all residential staff; working closely with SPCS and OHS professional staff to improve training, mediate and resolve staff issues.
  • Resolving moderate to higher-level participant issues, including crises and emergencies, and ensuring all concerns are promptly addressed; supporting staff and providing feedback during post-incident debrief.
  • Monitoring incident reports and ensuring all incidents are properly documented, including medical emergencies and disciplinary situations; serving as the residential staff’s case manager, tracking each incident report and subsequent follow up.
  • Managing parental communications via email in cases involving the dispensing of over-the-counter medications, participant injuries, incomplete homework assignments, check-out requests, and/or restorative conversations.
  • Managing lower to moderate-level parent phone calls and approving ARDs to contact parents on a case by case basis.
  • Assuring the well-being of participants by helping them physically navigate campus and off campus locations; complete community walks of multi-story buildings to conduct wellness checks and check-ins with staff.
  • Regularly attend floor/house meetings and residential staff meetings; conduct a weekly colors check in with residential staff and share trends and feedback with professional staff.
  • Hosting drop-in office hours in the afternoon for staff to come in and talk about the program and any stress, wellness, or other concerns they may have; referring staff to additional mental health support resources as necessary.
  • Responding to calls and text messages promptly at any time during their on-call shift, and addressing any incident or concern within fifteen minutes of notification.
  • Developing weekly participant email newsletters in conjunction with the ARD Programs regarding upcoming programs and announcements for approval by professional staff.
  • Approving or rejecting any purchase form requests by residential staff, consulting with professional staff for further guidance as necessary.
  • Serving as a liaison between parents or other offices on the Stanford campus (examples include: Conference Services, Stanford Catering, Dining, Department of Public Safety, etc.).
  • Maintaining a strong presence within the program - regularly visiting the residences, attending program events, and building relationships with the residential staff and participants.
  • Attending weekend field trips and excursions with participants to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Assisting with the training of the residential staff and providing guidance and leadership on scheduled arrival and departure days; creating the ARD on-call schedule and managing ARD time off.
  • Managing administrative tasks, including but not limited to: maintaining rosters, auditing keys, developing check in and check out sheets, purchasing, and event logistics.
  • Ensure that all programs and activities are accessible, inclusive, equitable, and contribute to participant’s sense of belonging and safety. Lead and actively engage in programs to cultivate a sense of belonging and bring participants together.  
  • Ensuring that participants and staff adhere to all applicable policies at all times, including the Administrative Guide Memo, program policies, the SPCS Code of Conduct and the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Transporting participants and/or other staff to various locations within and outside of the Stanford University campus via program-rented automobile or golf cart.
  • Providing regular feedback about the participants and staff to the SPCS and OHS professional staff and notify professional staff of any concerns regarding a participant or staff that require intervention.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the areas of either Humanities or Mathematics.
  • At least two years of experience in Residence Life at the high school or college level (3 years preferred).
  • Experience working with academically motivated students, preferably in an intensive residential setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive tasks with multiple deadlines and frequent interruptions. Including serving on call and responding to crisis situations throughout the day and night.
  • Ability to supervise others, enforce policies, solve problems, make decisions, and mediate conflict.
  • Flexibility and willingness to work long hours, including serving on call and responding to crisis situations throughout the day and night.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times when dealing with staff, participants, and parents.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and acumen for patiently responding to potential crises, including physical and mental health.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license; and eligibility to drive program rented vans (must be at least 21 years old).

Additionally, you will preferably bring:

  • Graduate level coursework in Education or a related field (graduate students entering their second year of their program are encouraged to apply).

Compensation

The compensation for the Resident Director position is $2,600.00 per week plus housing and meals, valued at approximately $1,822.45 per week, free of charge. Weekly pay is taxable income. This is a temporary, full-time, residential position with substantial on-call duties averaging 60 hours per week. This position is exempt and is therefore not subject to the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
