Course Assistant

Position Overview

The Course Assistant role will support Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies (SPCS) Summer Institutes program and/or Stanford Middle School Scholars Program. Courses meet for three hours each day (Monday through Friday) for live online classroom discussions between the instructor and students. Not for credit or grade, our challenging courses provide in-depth and interactive exploration of advanced topics. The program emphasizes building skills along with acquiring knowledge, and is designed to create environments that foster creativity and collaboration where students learn from each other as well as from their instructors.

The Course Assistant position is ideal for undergraduate students and all others who enjoy working with pre-collegiate students (Grades 7-11) in an online classroom setting. We are hiring for multiple positions.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist the instructor during each session with the following:
    • Remain engaged in instructional sessions, be present with video on, respond promptly to student or instructor issues via various communication channels (email, chat within video conferencing tool, Slack, etc).
    • Manage video conferencing tool waiting room and admit participants into each section, in accordance with class rosters.
    • Facilitate discussions, breakout rooms, as needed by instructor request.
    • Provide behavior management support, and ensure the expectations of the Code of Conduct are upheld. This includes, but is not limited to, disabling video conferencing tool features if used inappropriately (e.g. chat tool, annotation tool) and communicating directly with students during class sessions as needed.
    • Record attendance and complete absence reporting form.
    • Support instructors to upload materials and announcements to Canvas.
    • Support instructors to complete evaluations by providing notes on student participation as directed.
    • Attend small group office hours with the assigned instructor.
  • Attend commencement for the corresponding session and support the course instructor with preparing the course commencement slide.
  • Regularly checking-in via Slack and email with primary supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Completion of 30 units of coursework at an accredited college or university
  • Enthusiasm for supporting pre-college students and instructors in an online learning environment
  • A computer and a reliable internet connection to effectively perform job responsibilities in this remote role

Additionally, you will preferably bring:

  • Experience working in an educational environment or experience working with students ages 12-17, preferably with Stanford Online High School, Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies, or a similar program
  • Experience working remotely, demonstrating strong ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Interest in supporting a collaborative and inclusive learning environment for all participants and instructors

Compensation & Other Important Details:

The compensation for the Course Assistant position is $23.24 per hour. Hourly pay is taxable income. This is a temporary, non-exempt, part-time, seasonal online position up to 19 hours per week from early June to late July. Overtime is subject pursuant to state and federal wage and hour laws. You must be located within the United States for the duration of the assignment. Program dates, not including training, are listed below for your reference:

  • Dates and times for asynchronous and synchronous online training will be scheduled in early June.
  • Monday, June 16, 2025- Friday, June 27, 2025 (Summer Institutes Session 1),
  • Monday, July 7, 2025 - Friday, July 18, 2025 (Summer Institutes Session 2)
  • Monday, July 7, 2025- Friday, July 25, 2025 (SMSSP)
  • Monday, June 16, 2025- Friday, July 4, 2025 (SUMaC Online Session 1)
  • Monday, July 7, 2025-Friday, July 25, 2025 (SUMaC Online Session 2).
