Hosted by Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies, Stanford AI4ALL is a two-week online program that empowers high school students to explore AI. Students engage in real-world topics such as Computer Vision, Robotics, Medical AI, AI Alignment, and Natural Language Processing, while also considering the societal impacts of AI. Through research projects, guest lectures, and mentorship, students gain the tools to pursue STEM fields with confidence.

Position Overview

The Graduate Mentor is responsible for co-leading a group of up to twelve high-school participants through hands-on AI research projects. Graduate Mentors support and guide participants throughout all Stanford AI4ALL academic activities in the virtual classroom. The daily weekday working schedule will be from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM. Given the Graduate Mentors responsibility in fostering an intellectual community, Graduate Mentors must be current graduate students and have subject-area knowledge in either computer science, AI, or a related field. 

The Graduate Mentor will participate in one week of paid online training and onboarding prior to the program start and can expect additional pre-program work to prepare for their research project groups.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, guide, and mentor an assigned group of ten participants during daily project group lectures.
  • Co-lead research sessions, office hours, and small group conferences to provide feedback and deepen participants’ understanding of program content.
  • Collaborate daily with a co-Graduate Mentor, modifying content based on participant’s understanding of the material.
  • Attend all program-wide lectures, faculty talks, demonstrations, and related activities, providing support and assistance as needed.
  • Maintain a strong and positive community presence within the program, modeling positive behavior and building relationships with HAI staff, peer Graduate Mentors, and participants.
  • Communicate daily via Slack with the primary supervisor. Regularly check email and communicate with the supervisor and other program staff.
  • Adhere to the SPCS Instructional Handbook, Administrative Guide Memo, and Protection of Minors policy, paying particular attention to the program rules, daily schedules, and other aspects of the course.
  • Ensure that participants adhere to all applicable policies at all times, including the program policies and the SPCS Code of Conduct. 

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Graduate-level coursework in computer science, AI, or a related field (e.g., Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, etc.).
  • Experience mentoring or teaching high-school or undergraduate students (experience teaching minors and/or academically talented youth preferred).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts to high school students in a variety of ways to support different learning styles.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive tasks with multiple deadlines and frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to act responsibly, build teams, solve problems, and make good decisions.
  • Commitment to Stanford AI4ALL’s mission to drive AI innovation with societal impact.
  • Basic technology proficiency in our collaborative and participant-facing software, including, but not limited to: Canvas, Zoom, Slack, and Google Drive. 

Additionally, you will preferably bring:

  • Experience in at least one of the following areas: Computer Vision, Medical AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP), or Robotics.
  • Hands-on experience in project-based learning or AI research.

Compensation

The compensation for Graduate Mentors is $37.00 per hour. Hourly pay is taxable income. This is a temporary, non-exempt, part-time remote position. Graduate Mentors can expect to work approximately 25-35 hours per week during the program, with approximately 30 hours of pre-program work.
