Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory’s Outreach Summer Program (SAILORS) for young women in computer science is being renamed to Stanford AI4ALL.
In Summer 2018, Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies will begin offering Stanford AI4ALL, a three-week residential program for young women in grade 9 that aims to increase gender diversity in computer science. Now renamed, this program will continue to be based in the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, but with a new, updated curriculum developed by AI4ALL, an education nonprofit organization dedicated to training the next generation of AI researchers. Both SAILORS and AI4ALL were founded by Dr. Fei-Fei Li (Stanford University) and Dr. Olga Russakovsky (Princeton University), two world-renowned AI researchers dedicated to expanding access to their field.
Students in Stanford AI4ALL will divide their time equally between studying the curriculum designed by AI4ALL and partaking in ongoing research projects at the Stanford AI Laboratory. This collaborative effort allows Stanford AI4ALL to provide young women with both the technical knowledge and hands-on research skills necessary to begin exploring the exciting world of AI research.
Next year will mark the fourth summer that the Stanford AI Laboratory will open its doors to program participants. Last year, students had the opportunity to explore a wide range of AI applications, helping increase mobility through autonomous vehicles and developing methods to assist disaster relief using natural language processing. For the first time, the program will offer two tracks, one for students without prior knowledge of programming and another for students with coding experience.
